Project Description:

Effective November 30, 2005, The Space Show launched its Deep Space Communication Program.  The Space Show has entered into an agreement with former Space Show guest Jim Lewis, the Managing Director of the Deep Space Communications Network, to begin sending monthly Space Show voice and text messages to deep space.  This idea was conceived when Mr. Lewis was a guest on The Space Show August 31, 2005.  This new Space Show program will allow Space Show listeners an opportunity to compose and send their own message to deep space.

The Space Show will be sending one message to deep space per month starting November 30, 2005.  The first message will be sent by The Space Show.  Commencing with the second message, Space Show listeners can compete to have their message selected to go to deep space.  A four judge panel will select a listener submitted message for the actual transmission.  All submissions become the property of The Space Show and The Space Show owns the copyright to all submitted messages regardless of their being chosen for transmission.  Starting with the third monthly transmission, The Space Show and listeners will alternate as to who sends the message to deep space.  So in a year, listeners will have the opportunity to send six messages and The Space Show will have the opportunity to send six messages.

Messages that have been sent along with author information can be found following this program information.

Contest Requirements:

1.  All submissions must be submitted by e-mail in text no later than the 18th of the month available for listeners.  Thus, listener submissions need to be submitted no later than Dec. 18, 2005, Feb. 18, 2006, April 18, 2006, June 18, 2006, August 18, 2006, Oct. 18, 2006, and December 18, 2006.  While the entries need to be in text, they can represent a song, poem or anything (video is not available at this time) but all material submitted must be original and cannot violate any copyright law, nor can an entry include copyrighted material.  If someone entering the contest wants the message to go to space in his or her voice, a recording can be included, however, the winner will be given a chance to read the message on The Space Show or to record it directly with The Space Show for sending to deep space.

2.  The maximum length of the text message is one page which should represent a five minute voice message.  All entries are to be e-mailed to drspace@thespaceshow.com and The Space Show will forward them to the judges.

3.  You can submit a personal message, you can be funny, serious, informative, or educational.  All messages regardless of their genre, must take the high road.  No foul language and no character or organizational attacks will be permitted or accepted.  The Space Show and the three panel judge reserve the right to edit the winning submission, to accept or reject entries as they deem necessary.

4.  The four judge panel will consist of the following outstanding contributors to the development of the space industry.

            A.  Dr. David Livingston, Host of The Space Show.

            B.  Dr. John Jurist, space businessman, philanthropist and consultant regarding   human factors in space.

            C.  Ms. Barbara Sprungman, space educator.

            D.  Mr. Leonard David, senior writer for Space.com.

5.  By submitting an entry, you give The Space Show permission to post the message and your initials (unless you specifically state you want your name posted) on its website.

6.  Space Show listeners can submit only one entry per month but can enter the contest each month that listener messages are being transmitted to space.

Messages:

1.  The initial message was submitted Dec. 2, 2005 for the December 2005 transmission to deep space.  This initial message, which follows below, was composed by me, Dr. David Livingston, as the introductory Space Show message to deep space.

“Greetings from The Space Show.  The Space Show is an Earth-based radio talk show striving to move our Earthly humanity to a full space-faring status with a comprehensive space-faring economy.  Many of us here on Earth understand our connection to outer-space and the importance to all of us across our planet to achieving space-faring status. We all benefit.  Yet, it remains a challenge to us, is costly, its complex, and not everyone understands or appreciates this view or the necessity in becoming space-faring.

To help facilitate the interest in space and move us closer to becoming space-faring, The Space Show has commenced its Deep Space Communication Project wherein each month Space Show listeners will send a message in text and voice to deep space to hopefully reach other intelligences.  Earth people are a diverse people, sometimes more in opposition than in harmony.  We are curious, we have questions, we have a thirst for knowlege and we push the envelope for success and advancement in our lives, the lives of our family members, and in our society.

As you listen to our monthly messages beamed in your direction, I believe you will spot some themes, you will detect our impatience to get into space, our great sense of humor including our ability to laugh at ourselves, our frustration with the high space access costs, our expensive rockets, the politics, and the other barriers that slow us down in our efforts to be fully space-faring.  You will also hear from many of us how we want to go to space, to live in space in settlements on our Moon and on Mars. However we are ready to go now despite not knowing full the risks, the complications, and the long term impact on us, our families, and those of us staying behind on Earth.  We are drawn to space, we thirst for it, and we know its is the path that will enable humanity to be at its best, not just with one another, but with whatever lies beyond our reach, knowlege, understanding, and senses.

The Space Show and its listening family share the goals of exploring other worlds and seeking other life.  So do millions of people living all over the Earth.  As you listen to Space Show messages coming your way each month, starting with this message, get to know us.  It is our hope that soon we will be knocking on the door to deliver messages such as this one in person.  And by the way, if you know how to get out of a strong gravity well like we have on Earth at very low cost or with technology other than chemical rockets, please share it with us.

With much love and respect,

Dr. David M. Livingston, Founder and Host
